Cruise Ship: MS Statendam Sailed: October, 2007

We just returned from the Staten dam Australia/New Zealand cruise.
Overall, we enjoyed the cruise and found Holland America to be a cut above the Carnival,Norwegian and Royal Carribean cruises we have taken before.

Embarkation was a breeze having used Holland Americas online embarcation facility.

Clean: The crew did an excellent job trying to keep the ship hygienic. Sanitizers are available almost everywhere.

Cabins: The outside cabins are very good with Flat screen TV and DVD player and the bathrooms are quite large including bath tub combined with showers.

Food: We enjoyed the atmosphere of the main dining room, with elegant features and excellent service. Instead of the 4-5 course meals we are used to, they have reduced the number of selections on these cruises. This makes it easier not to over eat. However, at times, you must make sure you are actually ordering an appropriate quantity of food. The breakfast menu in the main dining room never changes and, on a long cruise, this becomes boring and tiresome. If you choose to try for the Lido, trying to get a seat during port mornings can be difficult.

Ports: We enjoyed the ports of call and especially liked the mellow tone of our cruise director. Announcements were polite and short. We enjoyed walking 8-10 miles each day we were in port, but our dining partners who were older and less mobile also quite enjoyed the offered tours.

Seas: The Tasman sea gets quite rough. We've been on over a dozen cruises and have not seen seas this rough over such a long period of time. A nervous cruises might be very uncomfortable. The ship staff offered plenty of crackers, apples, and other medications for free!

I would recommend the Holland American line and this ship.

My one disagreement with you was regarding embarcation. in Sydney March 2007 my wife saw me lose my temper for the first time in 40 years . the rudenes and incompetance of the shore side was unbelievable. there was no respnse to my adverse comments at the end of the trip. the ship is better than those I have tried in Fred Olsen but not up to RCI standards. I would use company and ship again and hope shore side has improved
