Holland America Introduce Native Travel Guides

Holland America’s Alaska-bound cruises in 2008 will see and hear about their surroundings from native experts. Alaskan native guides will be on board the majority of Alaska cruises on ships cruising Glacier Bay, thanks to a partnership with Alaska Native Heritage Centre.

The guides will give six or seven presentations over the course of the week-long cruise – including topics on wildlife, volcanoes and glaciers and will also be around to answer questions on-to-one. A Tlingit cultural interpreter will also be on board cruise ships at Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier to explain the origins of the Huna people.

"We are very pleased at how this programme has evolved," said Richard D. Meadows, CTC, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest relations. "Our guests visiting Glacier Bay will enjoy having an Alaska native guide on board the full cruise to provide another perspective on the land they're visiting."
